World War II Casualty Lists

While trying to find an obituary or notice of death for my husband's relative who died during World War II, I came across a great resource for anyone researching Kansans who served during World War II - particularly those who were injured, captured or killed.

The Manhattan Mercury (Manhattan, Kansas) had a series of articles entitled 'War Casualties' that appeared on a regular basis. The Manhattan Mercury was the only paper that had this type of article. Since Fort Riley is near Manhattan, that may have been a factor in the papers decision to publish this information. This paper is searchable on Newspapers.com.

When searching for the death of a family member, the surname can be added to the search.

The "War Casualties" article in the May 3, 1945 issue of the paper is a great example of the variety of ways this information was reported.
