Crawford to Rice
This Indenture made this twenty six
th day of August in the year of our Lord one
Thousand Seven Hundred and eighty eight
Between James Crawford of the County
of Madison of the one part and David Rice
of the county aforesaid on the other part
witnesseth that the said James Crawford
for and in consideration of the sum of
fifty pound current money of Virginia
to him in hand paid by the said David
Rice the receipt whereof he doth hereby
acknowledge he the said James Crawford
hath granted bargained sold aliened
and confirmed and by these presents doth
grant bargain sell alien and confirm
unto David Rice a certain tract or parcel
of land containing fifty acres lying and
being in the county of Madison and is
bounded as followeth (to wit) begin
ing at a sugar tree upon Samuel Gordains
line upon Paint Lick waters and the

north east corner of a survey of two hundred
acres where on the said Crawford now lives [?]
ning thence East one hundred & fifty
poles to a small elm thence south ten west
one hundred and six & 3/4 poles with said
Crawfords line to a cherry tree thence north
fifty two west one hundred and seventy
poles to the begining and all the estate
right title interest claim and demand
of him the said James Crawford of in and
to the said land and premises and all
deeds evidences and writing touching
or in any wise concerning the same to have
and to hold the said land and premi
ses hereby granted and sold with the
appartenance to him the said David
Rice his heirs and assigns forever to the
only propoer use and behoof of him the
said David Rice and of his heirs and
assigns forever and the said James Craw
ford doth covenant and agree to and
with the said David Rice his heirs execu
tors administrators and assigns that
the said James Crawford his heirs executors
and administrators shall and will
warrant and forever defend the land
and premises with the appurtenances
hereby bargained and sold to him the
said David Rice his heirs executors
administrators and assigns against
the claim of all and every other person or

persons whatsoever in witness whereof the
said James Crawford hath hereunto set
his hand and seal the day and year first
above written
