Working with Land Records

Image
Have you discovered all of the resources available on the FamilySearch website? If so, then you know how they can provide that little 'nugget' of information that leads to major breakthroughs in one's genealogical research. If not, then you are missing out on some very valuable resources. My favorite group of sources is the land records. As a U.S. researcher whose various family lines moved across the country, these records help me place someone in a specific time and place and sometimes help me connect family members. When I login to FamilySearch (accounts are free), the menu gives me several options. The Wiki is a fantastic resource to learn about records available in a community. I often use the Wiki, but the Catalog is my 'go to' resource. On the CATALOG screen, I type in the name of the county and then select the one I wish to work with from the suggested list.

Scavenger Hunt

Image
Do you ever find in your own research that leads you on a scavenger hunt? That's how I felt this morning when I was trying to figure out some of my 'bad' citations attached to James Crawford on my Ancestry tree. Fortunately, when I clicked on the top Entry citation, it opened up a window that provided enough information about this erroneous citation to help me locate my original research.

Who Is this James Crawford?

Image
Have you ever run across a record in a county you've been researching and have no idea how the person in the record fits with known families in that area? Well, that's my situation -- and it is anoter James Crawford. James and Martha Crawford sold land in Barren County, Kentucky. Tax lists for Barren County show a James Crawford with 200 acres on the Marrowbone River. These tax lists also show another James Crawford with 50 acres on the Marrowbone. This second James Crawford is thought to be James and Sally (Smith Duggins) Crawford. I've also identified the family of David Crawford who died in Barren County, KY in 1812. Now, I've found a deed for a James Crawford and Patsy his wife selling land in Wythe County Virginia to Peter Kinson. This 1806 deed indicates that James and Patsy were living in Montgomery County, Ohio at the time.

Deed Crawford to Kinson

I found the following deed in Barren County for a James Crawford and his wife, Patsy. This James Crawford was living in Montgomery County, Ohio in 1806. Heirs of James Crawford

Image
While obtaining a digital image of a deed, I decided to re-do my research of land records in Warren County, Indiana for the Crawford surname. Not only does my ancestor, Nelson G. Crawford, and his descendants have land records in Warren County, but also the James Crawford married to Martha Knight and his descendants have land records in Warren County. One of the finds (or re-finds) from this deed research was a deed identifying the heirs of James Crawford and Martha Knight. Adams Crawford Land

From my research in the Pulaski County, Kentucky tax records, I knew that Adams Crawford owned land in Pulaski County. In order to try and figure out whether Adams Crawford might be related to my Crawford Research, I tracked down the deed where Adams Crawford purchased land.
