Scroll, Click, Connect

Do you ever look at other trees on Ancestry? I know I do. I use them for hints. I also attach them as 'sources' so that I can get back to trees that match my ancestors.

However, I try not to add 'new people' from those trees to my tree. I also try to add additional sources to support the information in my tree. Some of those sources are obtained thru Ancestry and the hinting system.

However, some of my sources come from outside of Ancestry. Thus, when you search Ancestry's Public Member Trees for someone in my tree, the number of sources attached to the individual will be shown.

Bad citations

Do you have older source citations in your tree that your high school English teacher would yell at you about? Do you have source citations in your tree that even you can't use to locate the information?

I don't know about you, but I have such sources in my tree. As I'm reviewing my Crawford research, I'm finding those source citations.

Most of these HORRIBLE citations came from my early days of research when citation standards were just being developed.

Eliza Part 2

As discussed in my recent post, Duplicate or Different, I followed up on a 'notice of change' message to discover two Eliza Van Valkenbergs on Family Search. By looking at the differences between the two women, I discovered some clues that led to more information in Eliza.

One of those clues was the differing death dates for Eliza. In one case, the death date was given as between 1920 and 1930. I'm sure this was due to not finding Eliza in records.

The other Eliza had a death date of 1943 listed. Knowing that Eliza had been married several times, I suspected that a different surname was contributing to the difficulty in finding records. When I searched Newspapers.com for the term Eliza in 1943 in St. Joseph, Missouri, I found a notice of her death.

Duplicate or Different?

Do you ever check out someone else's tree to see if they have something that disagrees with what you have? I know I'm usually looking for confirmation, but I appreciate seeing conflicting information. That conflicting information makes me re-look at what I have and to look harder for additional sources to support what I have.

That's likely one of the reasons I work with the tree on FamilySearch. On this tree, I can look at the changes made to an individual. If those changes differ from information I have compiled, I can message the user making the changes and/or post a discussion about the change.

Thus, I utilize the 'watch' button to mark individuals I'm researching. Not only have I marked my ancestors to 'watch' but I've also marked other individuals in my research that I'm having trouble finding sources. Each week, I get notified of changes to those 'watched' individuals.

This morning's notification list included Eliza Honor Van Valkenburg, the second wife of my ancestor, Albert J Hutchinson. That's when I discovered that there are TWO of them in the Family Search tree.

Since I haven't found birth or death information for her, I have no idea which  Honor Van Valkenburg is the correct one. However, I do believe that these are the same women and that they are the same person I have in my database as Eliza Honor Van Valkenberg.

DNA Painter Tree

Did you see all of the prettily colored trees on various Genealogy Facebook groups this last week? Jonny Perl created a new tool on DNA Painter: Trees.

With the new trees feature, one can create ancestral charts in pedigree, fan and text view. What makes this tool unique is the ability to mark common DNA ancestors and then see a visual representation of those matches on the chart.

I tried doing something similar with my DNA Circles. I printed out a fan chart and then used a highlighter to mark the various circles I had.

With DNA Painter, I get a similar chart showing my genetic genealogy.

This chart was very easy to create.

James I. Miller

James Irwin Miller was born October 12, 1935, in Phillips County, Kansas, the youngest child of Guy Benjamin and Olive Sylvia (Wallace) Miller. He passed away at the Phillips County Retirement Center on July 14, 2019, at 83 years old. His father died when James was a year old.

James graduated from Phillipsburg High School in 1953. After high school, James went to work with the state of Kansas as an engineering aide for about five years.

In June 1958, James was inducted into the U.S. Army and attended Boot Camp at Ft. Riley. During his active service, he was stationed in Germany. In 1960, Jim was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army and transferred to the US Army Reserves completing his reserve obligation June 1964. During his six years of service, he earned a good conduct medal, carbine sharpshooter badge, rifle M-1 marksman badge, and was awarded as a light machine 1st class gunner.

After his active military service, James worked for the Missouri-Pacific (in Jim’s words “Misery-Pacific”) Railroad as a gandy dancer in Kansas City.

Later, James gained employment as a surveying aid for the United States Bureau of Reclamation in Region 7. He was assigned to the North Platte River projects with home office in Casper, Wyoming. Over the next 28 years during his government career, surveying activities took him to Oregon, Washington, Nevada, California, Idaho, Montana, South Dakota, Wyoming, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Texas, Colorado and Alaska.

On August 30, 1974, James was married to Mary Jeanne Stafford in Vancouver, Washington. They divorced.

James was a licensed land surveyor in the state of Oregon in 1982.

James returned to Phillips County where he married Joanne Philbrick on November 27, 1992 at the First United Methodist Church in Phillipsburg. Joanne convinced him he was too young to retire so James returned to surveying becoming an independent licensed Kansas land surveyor practicing in Phillips and neighboring counties for over 20 years. At the age of 79 in 2015, he retired with over 60 years of surveying experience.

Until his health started failing, he was an avid sports fan of his local grandsons. He enjoyed a friendly game of cribbage with relatives and spent afternoons doing puzzles and playing cards at the Center. He liked to cook and watched the ‘Donald Trump’ show.  In earlier years, he liked to fish and travel.

While living in Oregon, James was a member of the Elks Lodge. After returning to Kansas, James became a member of the Kansas Society of Land Surveyors.

James was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Guy Benjamin Miller, Jr., and two sisters: Arlene Case Hoover and Sylvia Usrey. He was also preceded in death by a step-father, Don Franklin Harsha, a step-brother, Jack Harsha, and step-sisters, Ruth Harsha Ratashak and May Harsha Lienberger.

He is survived by his wife, Joanne of the home and his brother-in-law, Jim Usrey of Whetstone, AZ. He is also survived by stepchildren Michael (Marcia) Philbrick of Seneca, Eugene (Vickie) Philbrick of Wichita, Gregg (Susan) Philbrick of Sugarland, TX,  Stacey (Darin)Moon of Phillipsburg, and Jeanne Ann Stafford of Tampa, FL. Jim is survived by step-grandchildren Ryan (Lindsey) Philbrick, Wichita, Anne (Eric) Williams, Shawnee, KS, Jason Philbrick, Missouri City TX, Ashley Philbrick, San Antonia, TX, Nathan Moon, Phillipsburg, Eric Moon, Phillipsburg, Tyler Lichter, Tampa, FL, 4 step-great grandchildren, and several nieces, nephews and step-nieces and nephews.

James was a loving husband, brother, step-father, and step-grandfather and will be missed by all who knew him.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m.  on July  20, 2019, with Pastor Blake  Stanwood officiating. Burial will be at the Fairview Cemetery under the direction of Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel in Phillipsburg.

Memorial contributions may be made to The Center of Phillipsburg and Hospice Services, Inc. of Phillipsburg and sent to the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel, 1115 2nd Street, P. O. Box 563, Phillipsburg, Kansas 67661

Finding the Daughters

Have you ever tried to piece a family together without the aide of a document identifying children. That's what I'm trying to do with William E. Crawford, son of James and Rebecca (Anderson) Crawford.

I'm using public member trees on Ancestry and the family on the FamilySearch tree as clues. Then I'm trying to find records to support the relationships.

Based on these trees, I think William E. and Elizabeth (Davis) Crawford had three daughters: Milly Crawford, Ann B. Crawford and Elizabeth Jane Crawford.

I believe I have found marriage records that may be for these three daughters.

Milly Crawford married John Douglas on 23 April 1830 in Decatur County, Indiana.

DNA Stats

Have you been keeping track of your DNA statistics? I know I keep track of my DNA statistics. Prior to Roots Tech 2019, I tracked the number of pages of Ancestry matches.

Thanks to Ancestry updates, I can more easily track this information.

When I add in my mother's DNA, I have over 350,000 DNA matches. Buried in all of this DNA data may be a clue to break thru my brick walls. Now, I just need time to work thru at least some of this data.

Revolutionary Ancestors

Were any of your ancestors in the colonies prior to the American Revolution? If so, have you tried to identify ancestors who may have fought in the Revolutionary War?

Since I am a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), I already knew that one of my ancestors provided patriotic service during the war: Nathaniel Hammond of Connecticut.

I had also started collecting documentation to prove William Buckles on my mother's side of my tree.

Beyond that, I didn't know which of my ancestors might have served. Thus, I needed to create a list of ancestors who might have served so that I could research them in Fold3 and the DAR databases.

To create a list of potential people, I needed to know who was of the appropriate age to serve. I found a wiki on FamilySearch that lists various wars and suggests 'Ages of Servicemen in Wars.'

Using that information, I was able to create a marked group of those whose

     Birth date is after 1715
AND  Birth date is before 1767

Statistics

Do you track the 'growth' of your genealogy database or your Ancestry tree?

I started tracking my statistics over a year ago. In January, I created a new table in my bullet journal to track the growth of my tree in 2019. At the first of each month, I record the data in my journal.

For my tree, I pull the statistics from two different sources. In RootsMagic, I look at the DATABASE PROPERTIES.

True or False?

Do you have ancestors living in the colonies prior to the revolutionary war? Have you applied to the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) or Sons of the American Revolution (SAR) for those ancestors? If so, have you ever encountered a warning that 'future applicants must prove correct service'?

This happened to me when I applied for the DAR. I was trying to use my great-grandmother's application (Josie Winifred Hammond Crawford - #319934) to apply.  She applied thru her great-grandfather, Jason Hammond (1762-1830). Unfortunately, I was told they wouldn't accept Jason Hammond as a revolutionary war ancestor. Since there were other Jason Hammonds living in Connecticut at the time, I'm assuming that the other Jason Hammond was the one who served. Fortunately, I was able to apply thru Jason's father, Nathaniel Hammond, who provided support for the revolutionary troops.

As I'm researching various James Crawford families in early Kentucky, I've found that the DAR has limited applications for one of those James Crawfords.

Unfortunately, many people for many years have mixed these men up. The James Crawford who has data in the 'correction file' is one of the James Crawfords living in Fleming County, Kentucky. This James was married to Sarah Vansant in 1786 in Botetourt County, Kentuckyand died in 1836. James Crawford is buried in the Hillsboro Cemetery in Fleming County, KY

Saturday Night Genealogy Fun

Here is your assignment if you choose to play along (cue the Mission Impossible music, please!):

1)  Ellen Thompson-Jennings posted 20 questions on her blog this week - see
Even More Questions About Your Ancestors and Maybe A Few About You (posted 27 June).

2) We will do do these five at a time - Questions 1 to 5 tonight.

3)  Tell us about it in your own blog post, in a comment on this post, or in a Facebook post.

Question 1: Which ancestor had the most children?

This was NOT an easy question to answer. I found a report in RootsMagic that told me the average children per family and maximum children per family.

However, I couldn't locate a report that would list the various families and the number of children.
