Well, that's where I am with the Garrard County tax records from 1797-1806.
I have four Crawford families that potentially live in Garrard County during that time period.
- James Crawford husband of Rebecca Anderson who purchased land from Thomas Kennedy. James' sons were Isaac (?-?), William (1784-1864) and James (1790-1856)
- William Crawford who claimed to have purchased land from J Kennedy. His sons would not have been old enough to be listed on the tax lists while William Crawford was living in Garrard County.
- James Crawford who married Martha Knight in 1793 in Lincoln County, Kentucky. James is thought to be the son of Rebecca Crawford. Rebecca purchased land from George Douglas.
- James Crawford who married Sally Duggins in 1799 in Garrard County, Kentucky. James is thought to be the son of Mary Crawford who married Alexander Moore.
Now, my task is to figure out who I found. Two of the families were obvious because of the land references.
- James Crawford on image 11 was shown with 146 acres of land on Paint Lick. The original grantor of the land was Thos Kennedy. Since I have a copy of a deed where this land was purchased and another deed for the sale of land that names Rebecca, I believe the James Crawford shown owning land on Paint Lick is the James Crawford whose wife was Rebecca.
- William Crawford is shown on image 12 with 1808 acres on Paint Lick. The original grantor of this land was John Kennedy. In 1795, a court case was filed between the Kennedy's and William Crawford over the land. I believe the William Crawford named in the court case is the William Crawford shown on the tax list in 1797.
A second James Crawford appears on image 41 of the 1797 tax list. This James Crawford is shown with 140 acres on Sugar Creek. The original grantor for this land was identified as Jacob Myres. Since George Douglas is found on image 43 with 200 acres of land with the same original grantor (Jacob Myres), I believe this James Crawford to be the son of Rebekah Crawford.
Also found in this same set of tax records are James and William Sellers. James and William married Mary and Sarah Crawford, respectively. Rebekah Crawford gave permission for Mary and Sarah to marry.
Since this second James Crawford isn't always listed with land, I used the proximity to Douglas and Sellers family to identify this James Crawford.
The fourth CRAWFORD family found was in 1806. William Crawford is listed on the same page as the James Crawford who purchased land from T Kennedy. James had a son William who was born in April 1784, making him old enough to appear the tax list in 1806. Another son, James, was born in 1790. Thus, he could be the male over 16 listed with James Crawford on image 425.
Based on the above analysis, a James Crawford is missing. This is likely the James Crawford thought to be the son of Mary Crawford Moore and the James Crawford who married Sally Duggins in 1799.
