Gowns, Petticoats and Silver Spoons

Have you ever seen a court case ordering the sale of the household goods -- including the gowns and petticoats -- to pay a debt?

I admit I haven't looked at a lot of court records - but this one is new to me.

I found the court case when looking for documents relating to CRAWFORD family members in Madison County, Kentucky. The index for the Court of Quarter Sessions case files led me to Case #588 for William Crawford vs William Cox.

Upon Attachment

The constabel having returned the attachment
executed on three feather beds & furniture  a glass
brush ten gownds six petticoats two basons one
dish one tabel one large silver spoon four small
one fourteen tea spons one silver candelstick
a silver cream pot one case of kinves & forks
& other articels the property of the said defendant
and it is ordered that the sheriff make sale of the
said property or so much thereof as will be of value
sufficient to satisfy the said William Crawford
the sum of fifteen pounds which late in our court
of quarter sessions for the County of Madison was
adjudged to the said William Crawford for his
debt also one pound nine shillings and three pence
for hist costs in his behalf expended and that you
have the same before the Justices of our said Court
at the Courthouse on the first Wednesday after the
Last Tuesday in October next to render to the
said William Crawford his debt & Costs aforesaid.

A silver cream pot one case of knives & forks

And thes articles the property of the said defendant

And is ordered that the sheriff make sale of the

Sufficient to satisfy the said William Crawford

The fine of sixteen pounds which late in our court

Of quarter sessions for the count of Madison

Was adjudged to the said William Crawford for his

debt also one pound seven shillings and four

pense for his costs in the behalf [pended] whereof

the said William Core is convict as appears to

us of [Rund] and that you have the same

before the Justices of our said Court at the 

Courthouse on the first Tuesday in June

next to render tot hes aid William Crawford

his debt and costs aforesaid
