Have you ever seen a name in a deed or court document and thought to yourself, 'Hey, I've seen that name before?' Well that was my situation when I was looking at tax records for Barren County, Kentucky.
Since I found James Crawford with 200 acres of land on the Marrowbone listed on the 1800 tax list for Barren County, KY, I started looking for other people owning land on the Marrowbone. That's when I found Moses Dooly Junr also owning 200 acres of land on the Marrowbone.
Not only was Moses Dooly Junr in Barren County, but so was his father and brothers.

Birth Order
Do you ever look at your genealogy information in a different way -- just for the fun of it?
I find that doing Randy Seaver's 'Saturday Night Genealogy Fun' blog posts helps me see my data in a different way -- even though I'm just doing it to participate in a fun activity.
This week's challenge, should you accept it:
I thought about doing my Germanna line (Briles) but switched to my DAR line.
I find that doing Randy Seaver's 'Saturday Night Genealogy Fun' blog posts helps me see my data in a different way -- even though I'm just doing it to participate in a fun activity.
This week's challenge, should you accept it:
- Pick one of your ancestral lines -- any one -- patrilineal, matrilineal, zigzag, from a famous ancestor, etc. Pick a long one if you can.
- Tell us which position in the birth order that your ancestor was in each generation. For example "third child, first son." Also list how many children were born to these parents.
- Share your Birth Order work with the community on your own blog post, in a comment to Randy's original post, or in a comment on Facebook, et.

Heirs of James Crawford
While obtaining a digital image of a deed, I decided to re-do my research of land records in Warren County, Indiana for the Crawford surname. Not only does my ancestor, Nelson G. Crawford, and his descendants have land records in Warren County, but also the James Crawford married to Martha Knight and his descendants have land records in Warren County.
One of the finds (or re-finds) from this deed research was a deed identifying the heirs of James Crawford and Martha Knight.

DNA Common Ancestor
Have you used the new Ancestry DNA match filters? Thanks to these new filters, I've been looking at my NEW matches who may share a common ancestor with me.
In the past, I would click on the match's tree to see if I could figure out how we connected. When the match's tree only has a few people, that becomes a challenge. Today, I tried clicking on the shaky leaf and discovered that Ancestry is doing some of the work for me.
Clicking on that shaky leaf opens a screen comparing our DNA that also suggests a common ancestor. This suggested common ancestor is based on shared matches.

Clicking on that shaky leaf opens a screen comparing our DNA that also suggests a common ancestor. This suggested common ancestor is based on shared matches.
At this point, this is just a clue. However, it is a clue that helps focus research to figure out how we are connected.
Since I have added descendants for many of my lines, I can sometimes figure out how we might connect. In this case, I haven't done enough forward research to have a clue how our lines connect. Either way, I can message the match with a link to that section of my tree to see if they can figure out whether we connect.
Thank you Ancestry for providing these hints!

Maybe Brothers
Have you ever found people of the same surname in a census record and later wondered whether they were an unknown sibling? If so, then you understand when I wonder whether Alexander Crawford could be a sibling to the other Crawfords who married in Lincoln County, Kentucky prior to 1800?
Alexander Crofford is listed on the 1789 tax list for Lincoln County, Kentucky. Even though I have been researching other Crawford families in this area, I had ignored Alexander Crofford because other researchers have identified Alexander Crawford as a descendant of Alexander Crawford and Mary McPheeters.
However, when I found Alexander Crawford on the Pulaski County, Kentucky tax lists along with William Crawford, I began to research Alexander Crawford.

The will of Thomas Adams identified the wife of Alexander Crawford as Margaret McElwee, niece of Thomas Adams. Since Alexander Crawford married Margaret McElwee in Lincoln County, Kentucky in 1788, I believe the Alexander Crawford of Pulaski County, Kentucky is the same Alexander Crawford found in the Pulaski County records.
The Find a Grave entry for Alexander Crawford uses family relationships in Augusta County, Virginia to make the case that the Alexander Crawford of Pulaski County, Kentucky is likely descended from Alexander and Mary McPheeters Crawford -- or a relative of this Alexander Crawford.

Two of Them
Have you ever suspected that there were two men of the same name in a community but lacked the proof? Once I discovered John Crawford owning land on the Hanging Fork of Dix River, I've wondered about the possibility of two John Crawfords.
Thanks to the help of other researchers, I've placed two brothers, James and William living along Paint Lick Creek. We've suspected that their brother's (John) widow was Rebecca Crawford who purchased land from George Douglass.
The deeds found for the John Crawford land on Hanging Fork do not support his being the father of the Sarah and Mary Crawford who married William and James Sellers in Lincoln County, Kentucky. Thus, it is unlikely that he is the husband of Rebecca Crawford.
As I was reading the Lincoln County Court Order book for 1783, I came across verification of TWO John Crawfords living in the area at that time. These records also show that William and James Crawford were also living in that vicinity at that time.

I am HONORED to have been selected as one of the four brick wall consultations! For my application, I submitted my fourth great-grandfather, James Crawford (1772-1854). Below is my research question:
Who is the father of James Crawford?
NOTE: Same Name issue with researching this James Crawford
- Next door neighbor in Preble County, Ohio was James Crawford (1770-1833) who married Martha Knight in 1793 in Lincoln County, KY. This James Crawford migrated to Warren County, IN where he died. Also migrating to Warren County, IN at about the same time was Nelson G. Crawford, the son of James and Sally (Smith Duggins) Crawford.
- There is a third James Crawford (1758-1836) living in Madison and Garrard counties in Kentucky prior to 1800. This James Crawford was married to Rebecca Anderson and migrated to Jennings County, IN and then to Jefferson County, IN.
- Garrard County KY histories refer to a Rev. James Crawford. There was a Rev. James Crawford (1752/3 – 1803) at Walnut Hill Presbyterian Church in Fayette County, KY. Rev. James Crawford was married to Rebecca McPheeters.
- DAR applications by descendants of James Crawford and Rebecca Anderson appear to have records mixed up with a James Crawford (1757-1836) who resided in Fleming County, KY. This James Crawford was married to Sarah Vansant.
I'm overwhelmed to have been chosen for this honor. I look forward to hearing what Mr. Hall has to say about my brick wall. I'm also looking forward to learning from the various sessions and from others attending the conference.
Please join me in Topeka on April 5th and 6th at the

Deeds and Heirs
I love it when I find a deed listing heirs! Do you?
I thought I was going to learn the heirs of Alexander Crawford of Pulaski County, Kentucky when I found the following in the Pulaski County, Kentucky Grantor Index
1843 Crawford et al Alex C -- Martha Crawford -- Book 13, page 330
Unfortunately, this wasn't a deed for the Alexander Crawford I found in the Pulaski County, Kentucky tax lists.
However, this deed does identify the HEIRS of John Crawford. If you have a Crawford family in Rockcastle County, Kentucky, then this deed might break down some walls.

More Taxes
Well, I'm chasing those Crawfords thru another set of Kentucky tax lists. This time, I'm looking in Pulaski County, Kentucky. Another Crawford researcher told me that the William Crawford found in the Madison County, Kentucky tax lists moved to Pulaski County prior to moving to Missouri.
On the off chance that I would find some of the other Crawford families in Pulaski County, I read the 1799-1822 tax lists. In addition to William Crawford, I found an Alexander Crawford who may be the same Alexander Crawford on the 1792 Madison County, Kentucky tax list.
The information I found regarding William Crawford shows that he paid taxes in Pulaski county for 1799-1802. William also owned 400 acres of land in Pulaski County. Since William does not appear on the Garrard County, KY tax lists after 1797, the Pulaski County information fills in the gaps between Garrard County and his arrival in Ste. Genevieve. However, I need to locate additional records to confirm this is the same William.

Theories, Trees, Brick Wall Ancestors
Last week, My Heritage announced their new DNA tool, Theory of Family Relativity. When I first looked at the Theories for my DNA kit, I was a little disappointed. I only had a few. Then some greater voice in the genealogy world reminded me why I only had a few.
My tree is basically a U.S. tree. The majority of DNA testers on My Heritage are European. Thus, I won't have as many matches on My Heritage and thus will have fewer Theories.
When I re-looked at one of those theories, I discovered a major clue -- not in the DNA itself -- but in the Theory paths. I hadn't noticed that a theory could have different paths.

Searchable Trees
Do you have a private tree on Ancestry? If so, I would like to convince you to make it searchable -- especially if you have a DNA test attached to that tree. (See AncestryDNA ThruLines FAQ)
Ancestry's new DNA ThruLines tool is helping me figure out how I connect with my multitude of DNA matches. The clues provided on my James Crawford ThruLines have helped me identify another granddaughter, Matilda Caroline Stoner.

Thru Lines Missing
I'm in love with how ThruLines is helping me learn more about my DNA matches. I wanted to show my husband how helpful this tool is.
Unfortunately, when I went to his DNA test to look at his ThruLines, the screen indated he didn't have any.

ThruLines Find
Have you experimented with Ancestry ThruLines yet? If not, you have to check it out!
As I posted earlier, ThruLines suggested that Matilda Caroline Stoner was a granddaughter of James and Sally (Smith Duggins) Crawford.
Based on the family tree suggested by ThruLines, I was able to research the family of Matilda Caroline Stoner and William Harrison Fields. Thru that research I was able to follow descendants to my suggested DNA matches.

Crawford vs Cox
Gowns, Petticoats and Silver Spoons
Have you ever seen a court case ordering the sale of the household goods -- including the gowns and petticoats -- to pay a debt?
I admit I haven't looked at a lot of court records - but this one is new to me.
I found the court case when looking for documents relating to CRAWFORD family members in Madison County, Kentucky. The index for the Court of Quarter Sessions case files led me to Case #588 for William Crawford vs William Cox.

Mustered Out
Have you ever discovered an obituary in a location that you never imagined? While searching for an obituary on a collateral line, I stumbled across a brief obit in a 'Mustered Out' column in the National Tribune (Washington, D.C.)
Since I had never encountered this type of obit before, I was curious to see if I could find an ancestor in a similar "Mustered Out" column. Thus, I searched for my great-great grandfather, Washington Marion Crawford who died in 1889. And - I found it!
